HALE MAUʻUMAE
Oʻahu
A family residence that looks back at Hawaiʻi's architectural past and builds forward from it, designed to feel settled rather than new.
Photography by: Mariko Reed
The project ran more than five years. It began before there was a site, walking undeveloped lots with the homeowners, and continued through sketched layouts, rooflines revised and revised again, the selection of the architect, and every finish, fixture, fabric, and piece of art that followed. Decisions were made, set aside, and taken up again as the family's thinking clarified.
That length of time is the project. Ideas could be tested and reworked rather than settled early, and the architecture and interiors could be shaped around the actual rhythms of the household: where people gather, where they rest, how the family moves through a day.
What the years produced is a house that felt lived in the day it was finished. It carries a depth that cannot be rushed, and it was built to serve this family and the ones that follow.
